Hi everyone! Today we have some new excitingness for you! We introduce a segment called “Strength of Character” where we discuss our favorite characters from any medium or genre and explain why we love them. Our definition of “strength” is not “most kickass” nor even “most likeable”. Instead, we want to identify those characters that keep us coming back to the same shows, films, and books over and over and what makes them so intriguing.  First nominees: Capt. John Yossarian and Lorelai Gilmore. How’s that for variety?

Next up, we discuss retrofuturism! Flying cars, floating homes, robot butlers, and nuclear powered everything. Why were these tropes so popular? What are our favorite pop culture representations? We wrestle with the complicated concepts of viewing the future from the past, viewing the past from the future, and viewing both simultaneously from the present. We also discover we both experience nostalgia for a future that never came to pass with our discussion of Tomorrowland. Plus, discussions of classic and modern science fiction and visits to the World’s Fair and colonies on Mars.

Last, we have our random recommendations, wherein Meg chats about her long-term love of Project Runway and Jen discusses her newly minted passion for Bob’s Burgers.

As always, our intro/outro music is “We are Highscore” by Krackatoa.

Thanks for listening!

Audio note: Jen is going to try and find a less clicky mouse!

Today we report on our pop culture homework! How did Meg respond to Veronica Mars? What did Jen think of Dark Matter? Then, we move on to Fall television of the current year: The Good Place, The Exorcist, Frequency, and Riverdale: what are our predictions? What will we be watching this year?

And, as always, our lovely intro/outro music is “We are Highscore” by Krackatoa.

Today we explore sorting and choosing factions in pop culture. When does it work? When is it problematic? Primarily, we talk about the sorting processes in Harry Potter and the Divergent series. Note: if you have not read the 3rd Divergent book, Allegiant, there are some spoilers, but we warn you ahead of time.

After that, we assign each other pop culture homework! Meg and Jen each choose a TV show for the other to watch for the first time. Watch along with us, if you like! We will be discussing these in the next episode.

Hello, we are back with original content! In this episode, Meg and Jen discuss tropes in a new game we like to call “TV tropes roulette”! For our main module, we talk about our favorite pop culture sidekicks, from Samwise Gamgee to John Watson to Harry Potter’s pals Hermione and Ron, plus a quick shout-out to Star Wars sidekicks the audience can’t understand (Chewie, R2D2, BB8, etc). We wrap everything up with a discussion of the Pokemon Go phenomenon!

Next week we head off to San Diego Comic Con and hope to be dropping you a line from the convention! Until then, thanks for listening

As usual, our excellent intro/outro music is “We Are Highscore” by Krackatoa.

Rerun: Episode 4 - Great Adaptations (apologies to Dickens)

Enjoy our encore of Episode 4:

In this episode we explore modernized adaptations of great literature - both Shakespeare and Jane Austen - and alternative forms of communication and narrative. It’s way goofier than it sounds. Also, we paraphrase our segment title “Great Adaptations” from Dickens and then never mention him. Sorry, Dickens!

There is also a little bit of singing. Very little. Don’t worry about it.

As usual, our lovely intro/outro music is “We Are Highscore” by Krackatoa.

We start out playing a new game we dub “Scenarios” - Essentially we each make up a series of geeky/pop cultural scenarios for the other to navigate. It involves Harry Potter and Star Trek! (also this: https://www.pinterest.com/NerdifiedJen/wesley-crusher-sweaters-dont-worry-about-it/)

For the main event, we have Smut Shaming or de-stigmatizing guilty pleasures. We have discussed before that we are adamantly against the concept of “guilty pleasures” - just like what you like and you should not be ashamed of it or made to feel shame because of it. In this segment, we express our love of fanfic and romance novels, defend them from shamers, and explain why they appeal. And, as promised, here are all the books we recommended during the show as well as some extras!

Fanfic book: Textual Poachers by Henry Jenkins

Jen’s Romance Recs:

YA sports themed romance: Miranda Kenneally & Simone Elkeles

We start out with a brand new game called “Fictional Five” that makes us feel weird about crushes on animated foxes. Remember, no such thing as a guilty pleasure!

Our main segment is about Superhero fatigue, in which we discuss both comic book movie/tv universes, but mostly Marvel! Superheroes - passe or here to stay? Superheroes have made the jump from comic book pages to screens big and small. Is the culture saturated? Who are our favorites? Who are we tired of? Also: if we had superpowers, what would they be?

Plus, tangents!

Spoiler: Meg and Jen are not particularly “Superhero Fatigued”.

Some geeky news, some silliness, and our creative process. We both write for fun and profit, and have picked up some tips and tricks along the way. Are you mildly curious about writing? Are you an established writer looking for tips to improve your craft?

Our conversation is full of advice from professionals and friends, and peppered with our usual geeky references.

As usual, our head-nodding intro/outro music is “We are Highscore” by Krackatoa.

wilwheaton:

I deliberately avoided the trailer and everything else for The Force Awakens, because after the shitshow that was the prequels, I was *done* with Star Wars.

But then all of my friends except one loved TFA, so Anne and I went to see it. And it made me fall in love with Star Wars again.

This teaser trailer for Rogue One made me so excited for this movie. I haven’t been this excited to see a new Star Wars movie since I waited in line for 12 hours to see Phantom Menace.

We also talk a little bit about attending Felicia Day’s book signing! Embrace your weird!

Completely unintentionally, we ended up putting together a podcast almost entirely about adult topics. After a rousing game of Marry/Sex/Kill wherein we challenged one another to marry, have sex with, or kill famous and/or fictional men, we move on to our “graphic novels: definitely not just for kids!” section.

Topics include:
Which Star Trek captain would you kill? Marry? Have sex with?
Which failed superhero would you choose?
Bonus: we revisit Meg’s crushes through the ages! (It’s totally embarrassing!)

Also, we talk about some of our favorite graphic novels: Saga and Sex Criminals! These aren’t your kids’ comics, my friend!
