Indoorswomen - Episode 67 - Cannibals, Babies, and More Spooky Stuff

Podcast school is back in session, and we’re ready to report on our assigned homework: Happy Death Day and NBC’s Hannibal.

For extra credit, we play a game of Gender Swap by recasting Star Trek (2009) and Crocodile Dundee.

Stay after class (or until the end of the episode) to hear our recommendations for Over the Garden Wall and Miss Sherlock.

Our intro/outro music is "We Are Highscore" by Krackatoa.

Indoorswomen - Episode 65 - Always the Time Traveler’s Bride, Never the Time Traveler

Why do time travelers love Rachel McAdams so much? We watched The Time Traveler’s Wife, About Time, Doctor Strange, and Midnight in Paris to get to the bottom of this peculiar typecasting. Yep, it’s an episode all about Rachel McAdams, romance, and time travel—what’s not to love?

(Special shout-out to Jaslyn of the High Expectations Podcast for convincing us to watch About Time.)

We also play a game of Fictional Five and chat about our fave sci-fi crushes.

Our intro/outro music is "We Are Highscore" by Krackatoa.

Indoorswomen - Episode 63 - Evil Goatee? Parallel Universe.

You guessed it. We’re talking about parallel universes in pop culture—alternate dimensions, bizarro worlds, multiverses, you name it. If there’s an evil goateed counterpart of a beloved character, we’ve got it covered. Fringe, Buffy, Futurama, and more!

Plus we fan cast adaptations for a couple of our favorite books (both Polish fantasy novels, coincidentally), and we share our random recommendations (Back and Movies with Mikey).

Stay tuned to the end for our off-the-cuff Fringe AU coffee shop fanfic (it's awesome, trust us).

Our awesome intro/outro music is "We Are Highscore" by Krackatoa.

Indoorswomen - Episode 61 - Dino DNA!

Dinosaurs have been leaving their footprints across pop culture for over a century! In this episode, we talk about some of our favorite dino depictions, franchises, characters, and tropes.

Topics include: Is Godzilla a dinosaur? How is Dr. Ellie Sattler so badass? And, should Dwayne Johnson be in every movie? (Yes.)

Minor spoiler warning: We rag on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom more than we planned to. Sorry not sorry. (No major plot details revealed.)

We also play a game of Would You Rather? Fandom Edition. And we wrap with our Random Recommendations: Carry On by Rainbow Rowell and Felicitations!, a Felicia Day podcast.

Stay tuned to the very end for bloopers.

Our awesome intro/outro music is "We Are Highscore" by Krackatoa.

Indoorswomen - Episode 59 - Beauty and the Bestiality?

We invited the hosts of our sister podcast, One Person's Trash Is Our Treasure (@optiot), to chat about the classic "beauty and the beast" trope.

What makes fictional interspecies romance so interesting? Who are some of our favorite couples? Was there ickiness lurking below the surface of The Shape of Water? Let's just say, things get hairy in this episode (and scaly, and alien, and... )

We also played a wild game of Marry, Sex, Kill and wrapped with random recommendations. This episode's recs are Hush, I'll Be Gone in the Dark, Tully, and Netflix's Lost in Space.

Our intro/outro music is "We Are Highscore" by Krackatoa.

Listen to Rachel and Jen on OPTIOT!

Indoorswomen - Episode 55 - One Chris to Rule Them All

Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, Chris Pratt... Who is the #1 Chris?

Join us for The Great Chris-Off! It's the least objective examination of which semi-interchangeable white actor named Chris is Best Chris. We pit the Chrises against one another in a head-to-head, bicep-to-bicep competition.

Listen to find out who we crowned the King of Chrises.

We also chat about a few Chris-free recommendations: Santa Clarita Diet, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and Love, Simon.

Our intro/outro music is "We are Highscore" by Krackatoa.

Check out this episode!

Indoorswomen - Episode 49 - We Want to Believe

Just like Fox Mulder, we can't stop talking about aliens. ET, Xenomorphs, Vulcans, you name it.

Why are there so many aliens in pop culture? What are some of our favorite depictions of aliens? Which alien tropes could we live without?

(Disclaimer: We don't actually talk about the X-Files in this ep, oops!)

We also play a game of "Strength of Character," featuring two quippy ladies: Elizabeth Bennet and Buffy Summers.

And we wrap up by sharing our random recommendations: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Coco!

Our intro/outro music is "We Are Highscore" by Krackatoa.

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers! The Indoorswomen open up the mailbag and tackle those hard-hitting questions. Like, what’s so great about pop culture anyway? How did we meet? Today we are chatting about documentaries! Stick with us, because even if you aren’t a fan of the usual documentary fare, we are sure you’ll find something to like in our choices about unusual competitions (Somm, Barista, King of Kong), or blowing the lid off the MPAA rating system (This Film is Not Yet Rated), or chronicling the life of one of our favorite characters/actors (For the Love of Spock).

Today’s topic is:  What pop culture makes us cry? Whether it is joy, sadness, or excitement, what makes us a little misty? Spoiler: we have never cried. Ever. Ok, that’s a lie.

We list sad themes, specific moments, crying triggers, and Meg does extensive psychological research to justify being a giant crybaby. From the emotional manipulation of sad music and tense storylines, it basically all makes us blubber. Especially Tom Hanks. Damn that Tom Hanks. It’s the least sad podcast about crying ever! Plus, memes of the past!

Bonus: a discussion of that really long episode of Jimmy Kimmel: the Oscars! We chat about our excitement about Moonlight’s win, our horror over the mix-up, and our ambivalence about Jimmy Kimmel’s hosting.

Tune in next week for a discussion of the pop culture homework we gleefully assign each other at the end of this episode. It’s fun to make people do things.

Hi everyone! Today we have some new excitingness for you! We introduce a segment called “Strength of Character” where we discuss our favorite characters from any medium or genre and explain why we love them. Our definition of “strength” is not “most kickass” nor even “most likeable”. Instead, we want to identify those characters that keep us coming back to the same shows, films, and books over and over and what makes them so intriguing.  First nominees: Capt. John Yossarian and Lorelai Gilmore. How’s that for variety?

Next up, we discuss retrofuturism! Flying cars, floating homes, robot butlers, and nuclear powered everything. Why were these tropes so popular? What are our favorite pop culture representations? We wrestle with the complicated concepts of viewing the future from the past, viewing the past from the future, and viewing both simultaneously from the present. We also discover we both experience nostalgia for a future that never came to pass with our discussion of Tomorrowland. Plus, discussions of classic and modern science fiction and visits to the World’s Fair and colonies on Mars.

Last, we have our random recommendations, wherein Meg chats about her long-term love of Project Runway and Jen discusses her newly minted passion for Bob’s Burgers.

As always, our intro/outro music is “We are Highscore” by Krackatoa.

Thanks for listening!

Audio note: Jen is going to try and find a less clicky mouse!

Correction: in Outlander, Claire is a nurse in WW2 - it has been a few years since I read it! - Jen

We start out playing a new game we dub “Scenarios” - Essentially we each make up a series of geeky/pop cultural scenarios for the other to navigate. It involves Harry Potter and Star Trek! (also this: https://www.pinterest.com/NerdifiedJen/wesley-crusher-sweaters-dont-worry-about-it/)

For the main event, we have Smut Shaming or de-stigmatizing guilty pleasures. We have discussed before that we are adamantly against the concept of “guilty pleasures” - just like what you like and you should not be ashamed of it or made to feel shame because of it. In this segment, we express our love of fanfic and romance novels, defend them from shamers, and explain why they appeal. And, as promised, here are all the books we recommended during the show as well as some extras!

Completely unintentionally, we ended up putting together a podcast almost entirely about adult topics. After a rousing game of Marry/Sex/Kill wherein we challenged one another to marry, have sex with, or kill famous and/or fictional men, we move on to our “graphic novels: definitely not just for kids!” section.

Topics include:
Which Star Trek captain would you kill? Marry? Have sex with?
Which failed superhero would you choose?
Bonus: we revisit Meg’s crushes through the ages! (It’s totally embarrassing!)

Also, we talk about some of our favorite graphic novels: Saga and Sex Criminals! These aren’t your kids’ comics, my friend!

As usual, our intro/outro music is “We Are Highscore” by Krackatoa.
