Indoorswomen - Episode 59 - Beauty and the Bestiality?

We invited the hosts of our sister podcast, One Person's Trash Is Our Treasure (@optiot), to chat about the classic "beauty and the beast" trope.

What makes fictional interspecies romance so interesting? Who are some of our favorite couples? Was there ickiness lurking below the surface of The Shape of Water? Let's just say, things get hairy in this episode (and scaly, and alien, and... )

We also played a wild game of Marry, Sex, Kill and wrapped with random recommendations. This episode's recs are Hush, I'll Be Gone in the Dark, Tully, and Netflix's Lost in Space.

Our intro/outro music is "We Are Highscore" by Krackatoa.

In this episode, we kick off with our annual tradition: some spoooooky scenarios for your Halloween pleasure. Then, we talk zombies: both speedsters and shamblers, both lacking and retaining humanity, both hilarious and scary. The discussion features (relatively) spoiler-free discussion of 28 Days Later, Zombieland, The Walking Dead, iZombie, and others. Bonus: some history of the zombie concept! Never say we didn’t teach you anything.

Original Show Notes:

Hi everyone! Today we have some new excitingness for you! We introduce a segment called “Strength of Character” where we discuss our favorite characters from any medium or genre and explain why we love them. Our definition of “strength” is not “most kickass” nor even “most likeable”. Instead, we want to identify those characters that keep us coming back to the same shows, films, and books over and over and what makes them so intriguing.  First nominees: Capt. John Yossarian and Lorelai Gilmore. How’s that for variety?

Next up, we discuss retrofuturism! Flying cars, floating homes, robot butlers, and nuclear powered everything. Why were these tropes so popular? What are our favorite pop culture representations? We wrestle with the complicated concepts of viewing the future from the past, viewing the past from the future, and viewing both simultaneously from the present. We also discover we both experience nostalgia for a future that never came to pass with our discussion of Tomorrowland. Plus, discussions of classic and modern science fiction and visits to the World’s Fair and colonies on Mars.

Last, we have our random recommendations, wherein Meg chats about her long-term love of Project Runway and Jen discusses her newly minted passion for Bob’s Burgers.

As always, our intro/outro music is “We are Highscore” by Krackatoa.

Thanks for listening!

We wrap everything up with a discussion of the Pokemon Go phenomenon!
