Correction: When Jen refers to the E.T. “DVD”, she of course means “VHS tape” because DVDs weren’t invented yet. #old

What gives us that front porch sitting, toes in the water, sun and sand and fun and friendship feeling? Indoorswomen Re-Run (with new Intro) - Episode 22 - Welcome to the World of Tomorrow!

Libsyn

Apple Podcasts

Hi all! We have another re-run for you guys today. It’s one of my favorites and I hope you enjoy it. I recorded a short BRAND NEW BONUS INTRO for this episode in which I give a couple of new random recs. Enjoy and we will see you in a couple weeks.

<3 Jen

Original Show Notes:

Hi everyone! Today we have some new excitingness for you! We introduce a segment called “Strength of Character” where we discuss our favorite characters from any medium or genre and explain why we love them. Our definition of “strength” is not “most kickass” nor even “most likeable”. Instead, we want to identify those characters that keep us coming back to the same shows, films, and books over and over and what makes them so intriguing.  First nominees: Capt. John Yossarian and Lorelai Gilmore. How’s that for variety?

Next up, we discuss retrofuturism! Flying cars, floating homes, robot butlers, and nuclear powered everything. Why were these tropes so popular? What are our favorite pop culture representations? We wrestle with the complicated concepts of viewing the future from the past, viewing the past from the future, and viewing both simultaneously from the present. We also discover we both experience nostalgia for a future that never came to pass with our discussion of Tomorrowland. Plus, discussions of classic and modern science fiction and visits to the World’s Fair and colonies on Mars.

Last, we have our random recommendations, wherein Meg chats about her long-term love of Project Runway and Jen discusses her newly minted passion for Bob’s Burgers.

As always, our intro/outro music is “We are Highscore” by Krackatoa.

Thanks for listening!

This episode kicks off our Women Who Stare at Tropes series. We’re talking bottle episodes this time around: Buffy, Doctor Who, Angel, Homicide: Life on the Street, Friends, and Sealab 2021, for starters.

Indoorswomen - Episode 33 - The Sisterhood of the Giant T-shirt

Libsyn

Apple Podcasts

Last episode, we assigned each other pop culture homework. Now it’s time for our pop culture report cards!

We discuss what we thought about Battlestar Galactica and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Especially the important bits of both shows. You know, Avatar’s adorable hybrid animals, the Cylons’ limited-edition models, and how this all relates to zombie movies somehow.

Bonus: Geek Out! makes another appearance, and we leave you with our random recommendations. Something we don’t recommend: naming a drink “Pocari Sweat.” Mmmm.

Indoorswomen - Episode 32 - Meta Throw Pillows

Libsyn

Apple Podcasts

Today’s topic is:  What pop culture makes us cry? Whether it is joy, sadness, or excitement, what makes us a little misty? Spoiler: we have never cried. Ever. Ok, that’s a lie.

We list sad themes, specific moments, crying triggers, and Meg does extensive psychological research to justify being a giant crybaby. From the emotional manipulation of sad music and tense storylines, it basically all makes us blubber. Especially Tom Hanks. Damn that Tom Hanks. It’s the least sad podcast about crying ever! Plus, memes of the past!

Bonus: a discussion of that really long episode of Jimmy Kimmel: the Oscars! We chat about our excitement about Moonlight’s win, our horror over the mix-up, and our ambivalence about Jimmy Kimmel’s hosting.

Tune in next week for a discussion of the pop culture homework we gleefully assign each other at the end of this episode. It’s fun to make people do things.

Indoorswomen - Episode 31 - Tom Hanks is Disappointed in You (aka Pop Culture Completism)

Libsyn

Apple Podcasts

Hi all! We were so excited to be back in the recording studio (aka our respective homes) after a month away! We kick off our return with a new Strength of Character segment, inducting The Office’s Michael Scott and The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s Mary Richards into our little Hall of Fame.

Our main event today is Pop Culture Completism. What is it about someone that makes us want to pursue all of their work? Do we do this? Do you?

We talk about directors and writers (Joss Whedon, Jane Espenson, Charlie Kaufman, Wes Anderson), authors (Donna Tartt, Neal Stephenson, Rainbow Rowell, JK Rowling), and actors (Ewan McGregor, Dan Stevens), plus many more!

Tweet at us (@indoorswomen) with your thoughts on completism!

Bonus ending feature: our Oscar predictions! We fearlessly predict some of the bigger awards, even though we aren’t caught up on our movie watching. Tune in next time for Oscar commentary.

Indoorswomen - Re-run! Episode 12 - Superhero Fatigue?

Libsyn

Apple Podcasts

Hi all! We have a re-run for you today: one of our favorite episodes about superheroes! It is also the first episode in which we play “fictional five”.

Our main segment is about superhero fatigue, in which we discuss both comic book movie/tv universes but mostly Marvel! Superheroes - passe or here to stay? Superheroes have made the jump from comic book pages to screens big and small. Is the culture saturated? Who are our favorites? Who are we tired of? Also: if we had superpowers, what would they be?

Plus, tangents!

Spoiler: Meg and Jen are not particularly “Superhero Fatigued”.

Indoorswomen - Episode 30 - We are Sherlocked (Part II)

Libsyn

Apple Podcasts

It’s the long-awaited sequel to our last podcast on Sherlock! We address comparisons between Sherlock and Doctor Who, favorite episodes, and we tackle the age-old question of “Benedict Cumberbatch: handsome or lizardy?”

As always, our amazing intro/outro music is “We are Highscore” by Krackatoa.

Indoorswomen - Episode 29 - We are Sherlocked (Part I)

Libsyn

Apple Podcasts

It’s no question that the Indoorswomen are big Sherlock Holmes fans and we are particularly fond of the modern-day adaptation “Sherlock” (BBC/PBS). We are, in fact, such big fans, that we had to split this episode into two parts due to excessive yammering. See you in two weeks for the (not so) stunning conclusion.

Today we are discussing “Elementary, My dear Watson”, and other things Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes never said. We are talking modern Sherlock adaptations, primarily the BBC show, the fourth series of which premiered this week. What do we like and dislike about these modern imaginings? What are our theories? What are our favorite episodes? And, the most important question of them all: is Benedict Cumberbatch handsome?

P.S. CPR was invented in 1956 and became a prominent life saving device in the early 1960s

Note: if you haven’t seen the BBC/PBS Sherlock adaptation, this episode contains some spoilers. Also, GO WATCH IT!

Indoorswomen - Episode 28 - Decemburton

Libsyn

Apple Podcasts

What’s this? What’s this? It’s our ode to some of our favorite Tim Burton movies, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, and the unusual blending of creepiness, humor, and Christmastime. Plus, our new adventures this year and a few good recommendations for you guys!

Episode 27 - Tune in Next Week for the Rap Battles

Libsyn

Apple Podcasts

Ok, we won’t have rap battles, but we do appreciate them. This week’s podcast is about musicals! Musicals, if you don’t know, are plays in which, to quote Mack from the movie Sabrina,“the actors periodically dance about and burst into song”. We discuss our favorites, live shows we have attended, movie and television musicals, and we devote some serious time to the musical phenomenon, Hamilton. We tried not to sing too much. But there is a little singing.

We ask the big questions: Listen to the soundtrack beforehand or wait? Live performances or Movie adaptations? Just what makes musicals so enjoyable anyway?

Big mentions include Hamilton, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Disney Musicals, Once More With Feeling (the Buffy Musical), Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Smash, and Book of Mormon. Special feature: reminiscences about our high school’s performances of The Music Man, Oklahoma!, and Grease.

If you are a musical theater lover or novice, you might find something in here for you!

Extras: Geek news about amazing new trailers and collaborations plus our random recs: Yuri!!! on ICE and Crash Course on Youtube.
