Scenarios - Meg leads Jen and the boys on a superhero’s journey

Name that Flick - A special game for Meg (revenge for scenarios)

Fictional 5 - What 5 fictional historical/period figures are on your list? #AlexanderHamilton was popular

Gender Swap - Taking our favorite franchises and flipping the genders - Dune, Firefly, Silicon Valley, and The Fellowship of the Ring

Correction: in Outlander, Claire is a nurse in WW2 - it has been a few years since I read it! - Jen

We start out playing a new game we dub “Scenarios” - Essentially we each make up a series of geeky/pop cultural scenarios for the other to navigate. It involves Harry Potter and Star Trek! (also this: https://www.pinterest.com/NerdifiedJen/wesley-crusher-sweaters-dont-worry-about-it/)

For the main event, we have Smut Shaming or de-stigmatizing guilty pleasures. We have discussed before that we are adamantly against the concept of “guilty pleasures” - just like what you like and you should not be ashamed of it or made to feel shame because of it. In this segment, we express our love of fanfic and romance novels, defend them from shamers, and explain why they appeal. And, as promised, here are all the books we recommended during the show as well as some extras!

Fanfic book: Textual Poachers by Henry Jenkins

Jen’s Romance Recs:

YA sports themed romance: Miranda Kenneally & Simone Elkeles

Urban Fantasy, no explicit sex (fade to black) - Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs

Urban Fantasy with sex - Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris (LOTS OF SEX - Laurel K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series)

Urban Fantasy with some sex and lots of jokes - Undead and Unwed by Mary Janice Davidson

Steampunk Werewolf romance - Soulless by Gail Carriger

Contemporary amusing romance with a relatable heroine - Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie

Contemporary romance with my kind of guy - Vision in White by Nora Roberts

Historical romance, light - Desperate Duchesses by Eloisa James, Nine rules to break when romancing a rake by Sarah Maclean

Historical romance, epic - Outlander by Diana Gabaldon,

Epic Fantasy Romance - Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey

M/M romance - Him by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

YA romance, fairy tales - Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

YA romance, angels and demons - The Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

YA romance, contemporary - Stephanie Perkins trilogy - Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the boy next door, Isla and the Happily Ever After

Romance, contemporary, but with interesting structure - anything by Rainbow Rowell

YA comic book, historical elements - The Dreamer

We start out with a brand new game called “Fictional Five” that makes us feel weird about crushes on animated foxes. Remember, no such thing as a guilty pleasure!

Our main segment is about Superhero fatigue, in which we discuss both comic book movie/tv universes, but mostly Marvel! Superheroes - passe or here to stay? Superheroes have made the jump from comic book pages to screens big and small. Is the culture saturated? Who are our favorites? Who are we tired of? Also: if we had superpowers, what would they be?

Plus, tangents!

Spoiler: Meg and Jen are not particularly “Superhero Fatigued”.

Our conversation is full of advice from professionals and friends, and peppered with our usual geeky references.

As usual, our head-nodding intro/outro music is “We are Highscore” by Krackatoa.

wilwheaton:

I deliberately avoided the trailer and everything else for The Force Awakens, because after the shitshow that was the prequels, I was *done* with Star Wars.

But then all of my friends except one loved TFA, so Anne and I went to see it. And it made me fall in love with Star Wars again.

This teaser trailer for Rogue One made me so excited for this movie. I haven’t been this excited to see a new Star Wars movie since I waited in line for 12 hours to see Phantom Menace.

We also talk a little bit about attending Felicia Day’s book signing! Embrace your weird!

Completely unintentionally, we ended up putting together a podcast almost entirely about adult topics. After a rousing game of Marry/Sex/Kill wherein we challenged one another to marry, have sex with, or kill famous and/or fictional men, we move on to our “graphic novels: definitely not just for kids!” section.

Topics include:
Which Star Trek captain would you kill? Marry? Have sex with?
Which failed superhero would you choose?
Bonus: we revisit Meg’s crushes through the ages! (It’s totally embarrassing!)

Also, we talk about some of our favorite graphic novels: Saga and Sex Criminals! These aren’t your kids’ comics, my friend!
